Most counties in the United States will allow the addition of a small building on most residential Picture of webmaster properties up to 120 SF (10X12FT) without obtaining a building permit. And guess what! Some US counties are even increasing the square footage to allow placement on residential property for all these mini-cabins being built nowadays. That is a very welcome trend. Prefab wood sheds offer the convenience of fast installation and perhaps a guarantee on materials and workmanship by the builder. It is important to do your research before purchasing a shed and try to get some idea of the dependability of the builder. Remember most of the time the price of the shed will not include delivery charges, always ask about that aspect. The cost of these prefab sheds can be a shocker - at least to me anyway. Just visit the Home Depot to check prices. But, when properly built these small useful buildings can add to the overall value of your property.

    BEACH HUTS   Most visitors to this website know that wooden storage sheds are mostly used to store lawn care items or tools, personal junk, paint and automotive service items, etc. But, there is a historical use of wood sheds for this very unique purpose in several countries such as Great Britain, Australia, and Thailand to name a few and that is to use wood sheds as swim suit change rooms, a place used to get out of the wind and dry off after swimming in the ocean. I have not ever seen one of these units, I do not know if they were ever used in the US or not. People use these sheds for light cooking of food like for picnicking at the beach. The thing is these buildings are really "sheds" not mini cabins for overnight use or long term living. Anyway, that is my impression of them. A simple shelter used to give a person(s) someplace to rest and warm up at the beach.

  6. BUILDING A CARRIAGE HOUSE/SMALL BARN/SHED   This video documents the building of a very beautiful shed - the builders really paid attention to detail. This wood shed frame was built on a very thick concrete foundation. Actually, in my opinion it was built almost to housing standards. The owner Chet built this shed using plans obtained from: "Better Barns Hardware & Plans, LLC".

    “I built a Carriage House with the help of my wife Cindy, my two daughters Chelsea & Caitlin, and with special help from my niece Elana and my nephew Matt. There are two songs on the video - both are done by Van Morrison. The first is Wild Nights and the second is Domino. We built it over the course of one week and spent about $1700 for it.  I paid 700 for the concrete slab and about 1000 for everything else (I bought pre-fab windows). The high roof pitch was primarily designed for the storage but the aesthetic of the shed was never meant to match the house. Rather, the shed, and the pergola, and the deck are all complimentary forms in an overall landscape design. I would draw your attention to rolling landscape designs like Central Park in New York or Greenfield Village in Dearborn where an eclectic collection of forms results in a pleasing design. It was very intentional. There are cripples on either side of the windows. This provides more than enough support for these small windows even though the studs are on 24" centers (and not 16). The double 2x4's on the back wall of the shop are there because they hold almost 2 tons of hardwood lumber. I'm not sure the video shows it very well but, I use the back 2 feet of the shop for lumber storage. Double 2x4's were an easy way to create a really strong lumber rack for very little investment. The rafter/truss are 2x4 on the slope and 2x6 on the run. Structurally they could have been 2x4 all around but I wanted to use the ceiling from more storage so I went with 2x6.”

    HANDY HOME PRODUCTS   This is probably a pretty large company producing sheds and other wood products for the big box stores. I wonder if they took the place of the "Tuff Shed" company. Because you can buy these buildings at all the major supply places like the Home Depot and Lowes, and other similar lumber yards. Picture on the right is of their 8X8X8FT "Kingston" model located in the Marco Series group on their website. It is the most basic model they sell.

This is some kind of prefabricated plastic roof system which i guess greatly simplifies the building of an outdoor shed. I wrote to this company and they sent me the following email message:

  38. THE TWINS SHED PROJECT   Wowzers! The man doing this shed building project certainly went all out. Using mostly extra material he had on hand he designed and built this very sturdy twin shed set-up. Lots of ideas here for your own shed building project, just pause the video to view current step.

    “. . . I started dreaming up this project in the summer of '09. I had quite a bit of lumber in my garage that I was saving for a future project and decided this was it. I wanted to build a carport, but I needed more storage space so I started sketching up ideas and based on the material I had been saving, in come cases up to 5 years - this is what I came up with. It had to be heavy duty, withstand high winds and earthquakes and it had to look good: Look good for me and my neighbors. I wanted the sheds to be low maintenance and the used aluminum roofing I used as the siding really made that happen. I bought 65 sheets of 28" x 10' for two dollars each back in 2006. I stored it for a long time and finally got tired of all the extra space being taken up so not only did these sheds free up space, but I have created tons of storage space in addition to an outdoor home office/man cave space to relax in and get away. I broke ground on November 1st, 2009 and put up the first shed on Dec 2nd 2009. I had to work in between the rain storms so the roof had to be sealed. The second shed went up on January 10th. The carport didn't go up until June of 2010. It was a lot of work, but once I figured out what I was going to do in the building process I simply repeated the process so the second shed was basically a no brainer. I hope you like the video too, it took me 20 hours to put it together.”
